Our first week of byes in the league, and it seems like total point scored chilled a bit in general as a lot of heavy-hitting players (Adrian Petersen, Miles Austin, especially) too the week off. There’s been a lot of strong performances this season by every team in the league, as evinced by the fact that half the league is at a 50/50 win record, only two teams have positive win records, and no one has 0 wins.
Team of the Week: This goes to the highest scoring team which is...The Watchmen! Andre Johnson was sadly benched, but Watchmen posted 157 points thanks largely to San Diego’s crushing performance against the ‘Cards (both Antonio Gates and the SD Defense were on Watchmen’s team).
Match-up of the Week: GDCK versus Bearpaws. The ‘Paws were off to a mighty lead, but only up 21 points going into Monday Night’s game. Even though the Dolphins/Patriots game was largely decided by special teams, GCDK eeked out just enough points to pull off a win (the game was tied for a decent chunk of Monday night). Very cool stuff.
Best Performances of the Week:
Reggie Wayne, WR, 47 points (Legal Beagles): Wayne continues to be the best receiver in the league and fuels another huge win for the Beagles.
Antonio Gates, TE, 38 points (Owner: Watchmen) - The best player on Watchmen, week in and week out.
Arian Foster, RB, 38 points (Owner: Vikings) - and all that after being benched for a quarter and a half due to “bad behavior”!
San Diego Defense, 30 points (Owner: Watchmen) - The top scoring starting defense in a week of crazy-high defensive scores (5 teams had a defense that posted more than 20 points; the highest was actually the Patriots but they’re a Free Agent).
Best Free Agent of the Week: Terrell Owens posted a whopping 53 points in his break-out performance as a Bengal (the most points of any player in the game this week, actually), after weeks of mediocrity (seasons of it, really). Total fluke or a sign of a season of greatness? Will any one in our league take that gamble?
Tough-luck Team of the Week: Tough call, so I’ll call it a tie. The Bearpaws had a close match-up that was, in large part, decided by Jay Cutler getting sacked 9 times, throwing two INTs, and then being forced out of the game with a concussion. The Giants are cruel. Meanwhile SpiderKings had their entire team save Calvin Johnson underperform, with Ray Rice being injured and Randy Moss being held to 0 receptions being particularly brutal. Spider Kings have had a rough time in general; no team has had more points scored against them in the league, so they seem to always play opponents on their “lucky/hot weeks”. Better luck next week, guys!
Critical Player Failures: So, so many this week, but I'll mention Tom Brady and Randy Moss. I'm sure the Sentinels and SpiderKings are deeply annoyed that, in a game where the Patriots won 41-14, Tom Brady has 10 points and Randy Moss has 0 points. More a knock against Miami's terrible special teams and offense then against these two, but still...shocking.
What Could Have Been: The Wildcats didn’t remember to swap out their QB for bye-week, and that hurt: Carson Palmer actually had a brilliant 23 point performance. They left quite a bit more points on the bench as well, slightly more than anyone else. Ragazzi Pazzi had a weak win; any line-up change would have pulled a victory out.
Coming up in week 5: We have a “battle for a winning record” between the Elune Sentinels and the Legal Beagles and not one, but two Father-Son match-ups (SpiderKings are playing the SHARKS, and GCDK is squaring off against Watchmen). New England Patriots, Miami Dolphins, Pittsburgh Steelers, and Seattle Seahawks are on bye this week, so plan accordingly.
